KCSC Issues Warnings to JTBC for Airing False CCTV Video Footage of BTS Suga DUI Incident
The Korea Communications Standards Commission (KCSC) has finally taken serious action against the recent false CCTV video footage in the BTS Suga DUI case.
On September 2, a Korean media outlet reported that the KCSC would announce legal sanctions against JTBC for mistakenly reporting someone else’s CCTV video footage as BTS Suga.
Apparently, the KCSC had conducted a general meeting on the same day. The committee then unanimously requested an official statement from the JTBC production team related to the ‘JTBC Newsroom’ broadcast on August 7.
If somehow the production team provided a statement that makes sense while approved by the committee, JTBC must then attend a meeting for a Q&A session. Only after this meeting will KCSC decide on the level of sanctions for JTBC.
Previously, JTBC’s report on August 7 aired the false CCTV video footage on the BTS Suga DUI incident. After the real CCTV footage emerged, JTBC issued a brief official apology, confirming that they had indeed made a false report.
This mistake then resulted in massive complaints. The public accused JTBC of having violated Article 14 of the Broadcasting Review Regulations on objectivity.
KCSC has now stepped up and taken a firm stance on this mistake. The committee finally declared that JTBC had committed a severe case of misinformation.
“Last year, we imposed a legal sanction after reviewing broadcasters who have cited the Kim Man Bae recording.
We have continued to impose severe penalties for those using unverified materials since.”

Will JTBC Really Get the Punishment, Though?
Finally, questions started to emerge about whether the KCSC would truly impose the sanction on JTBC. After all, the KCSC committee is currently facing an authority issue.
Therefore, some experts believe that even though the KCSC later decided to impose severe punishment on JTBC, it is highly likely that this decision will be challenged using legal ways in court. Why?
