Korean Entertainment Suffers from the Reckless 2024 Korea Martial Law

It’s safe to say that South Korea’s entertainment industry has faced one of its biggest disruptions in years. The martial law, declared by President Yoon Suk Yeol on December 3, 2024, threw many plans into disarray, causing cancellations and delays. It was a huge shock not only for the citizens of Korea but for the Korean entertainment world, which had already been dealing with challenges throughout the year.

While the martial law was lifted less than 24 hours later, the damage has been done and the ripple effects continues. The announcement came late at night and, understandably, many entertainment programs had to be adjusted, some even canceled. Let’s break down what happened with the major events and shows.

Latest Update from All the Crucial Shows, Concerts, and Events

Despite the initial shockwaves of the 2024 Korea martial law declaration, Korean entertainment industry has suffered from major update in its program schedule.

Here’s the complete breakdown:

Lee Seung Hwan Concert

Initially canceled in the wake of the martial law declaration, Lee Seung Hwan quickly reversed his decision. His concert is now going ahead as planned, signaling that the Korean entertainment world is adapting fast after the reckless 2024 Korea martial law.

Seo Hyun Jin’s Interview

On the flip side, actress Seo Hyun Jin had her scheduled interview for Netflix’s original K-drama “The Trunk” on December 4 canceled. The rescheduling is still under discussion, emphasizing the unpredictability of the entertainment industry during these turbulent times.

Kim Soo Hyun, STAYC’s Sieun Pop-Up Perfume Brand Event

Similarly, a pop-up event for perfume brand featuring actor Kim Soo Hyun, STAYC’s Sieun, and WJSN’s Yeoreum was called off due to the martial law situation, leaving fans disappointed but understanding the necessity of caution.

Dua Lipa’s Concerts

One of the most highly anticipated performances, Dua Lipa’s concerts in South Korea on December 4 and 5, is proceeding as planned. Despite the political turmoil, her team has confirmed the concerts will go ahead, although they are monitoring the situation closely.

Jang Bum Joon’s Concerts

Korean singer Jang Bum Joon, who also had concerts on December 4 and 5, reassured his fans with a heartfelt message on his YouTube channel. He asked everyone to stay informed while his concert continues, despite the unsettled political landscape.

Film Screenings

On the film front, screenings such as “The Crow” and “These Trivial Things” in Seoul will proceed as scheduled.

Additionally, director Yang Woo Suk’s event for his new movie “Big Family” is moving ahead without disruption.

All the screenings and events update has showcased that Korean entertainment is stable even with the 2024 Korea martial law aftermath, especially the film industry.

Broadcasting Disruptions: What Was Affected?

Meanwhile, update from the Korean entertainment broadcast industry also took a hit during the 2024 martial law crisis. Numerous programs suffered from cancelation or replaced by emergency news broadcasts. Here are some key changes:

  • MBC: Several MBC programs were canceled on December 4. This included the beloved Radio Star and other shows like “Brewer Lee,” which were replaced with news specials. This change was made to provide real-time updates on the evolving situation.
  • TV Chosun: Similarly, TV Chosun’s “Miss Trot” also announced that its episode on December 4 canceled, leaving fans without their weekly dose of entertainment.
  • SBS: On SBS, the episode of “Kick a Goal – Expansion of the Universe” was pulled, with a special broadcast of “8 O’Clock News” taking its place to cover the national crisis.
  • tvN: “You Quiz on the Block” on tvN was left in limbo, with no final decision made on its airing. This reflects how quickly things can change in the world of broadcasting, especially during a national emergency.
  • KBS: Some networks, like KBS, had a smoother transition. Programs like “The Return of Superman” and “Studio K” continued as planned, and dramas like “Face Me” and “Cinderella Game” followed the original schedule. KBS 2TV’s programming remained mostly unaffected, providing some sense of stability during a time of uncertainty.

Will the 2024 Year-End Awards Be Affected?

Finally, in the midst of the political upheaval, many fans were worried about whether the much-anticipated 2024 KBS Year-End Awards would be canceled. Fortunately, KBS quickly reassured the public:

  • The 2024 KBS Gayo Festival will take place on December 20 at 8.30 PM KST.
  • The 2024 KBS Entertainment Awards will air on December 21 at 9.20 PM KST.
  • The 2024 KBS Drama Awards are still set for December 31 at 7.50 PM KST.

These iconic events, which celebrate the best of Korean entertainment, will proceed as scheduled, much to the relief of fans. Despite the initial disruption caused by the martial law declaration, the year-end celebrations will continue, ensuring that the industry ends the year on a high note.
