Kpop singer-songwriter IU (Lee Ji Eun) reportedly faces another plagiarism issue. The unknown individual had officially reported IU to the police under accusation of plagiarizing a total of 6 songs, including Good Day and Celebrity. Kpop Singer-Songwriter IU Faces Official Police Reports on Plagiarism Issue – What Happened?
2023 has been another challenging year so far for singer-actress Lee Ji Eun, commonly famous as IU. After previously caught in a payment controversy in a new drama, and failing to bag Best Actress at the 2023 Baeksang Awards, Kpop singer-songwriter IU now faces another plagiarism controversy.
What’s worse, an unknown individual even made official police reports for their plagiarism accusation against IU.
On May 10, Maeil Business News reported that unknown individual A had made official police reports against IU. A reported IU to the Seoul Gangnam Police Station on May 8 for allegedly violating the copyright law.
What Happened Behind Kpop Singer IU and Her Plagiarism Police Reports?
Based on the official police reports, the accuser claimed that there were circumstances proving 6 songs of IU had plagiarized the music of foreign and domestic artists.
The songs that have faced such surprising claims are Pink Shoes (The Red Shoes), Good Day, BBIBBI, Pity, Boo, and the iconic Celebrity song. Among these six tracks, IU participated in composing Celebrity and producing Pippi.
For Good Days and Pink Shoes (The Red Shoes), the police reports stated that they both had significant similarities in melody, rhythm, and chord progression. IU 2013 song Pink Shoes (The Red Shoes) previously faced the same plagiarism controversy, with many similar features to German band Nekta’s song: Here’s Us. At the time, Nekta had reportedly sent an email to IU’s former agency Loen Entertainment but did not receive any response.
The police reports further explained that all 6 songs of IU face alleged plagiarism suspicions within their intro parts. It was reportedly crucial as intros are parts that commonly raise the curiosity of the listeners.

The 6 songs in question all have plagiarism issues in the intro, a part that supposedly raises curiosity in the audience and determines whether to continue listening to the song.”

“No Explanations and Unreasonable Attitude”
As if the accusations weren’t enough, the unknown accuser also stated that they reported IU to the police because of her lack of response and unreasonable attitude.
“Despite having several plagiarism suspicions, IU did not provide any explanation. Instead, she raised different issues, such as copyright infringement, leading to the deletion of these posts.
I filed this report because I believe there’s a problem in the public’s lack of awareness and irrationality. And the attitude of judicial agencies in acknowledging the copyright infringement and calculating the amount of damages was simply unreasonable.”

Despite not being the original author and target of plagiarism, the accuser and their law firm decided to file police reports against IU. That is because the accuser believes that IU has a profit motive as a singer, and she has faced many plagiarism issues. Hence, the alleged plagiarism issues were considered habitual.
“Due to her profession as a singer, it is undeniable that the defendant (IU) holds a profit motive.
Moreover, it is also possible that plagiarism continuously happened as a habitual offense based on numerous different allegations.
Therefore, the plaintiff has the right to file official police reports against the defendant (IU) who had habitually infringed the copyright for profit although they are not the victim.”

EDAM Entertainment Issues Official Statement Regarding the Police Reports
Finally, it took EDAM Entertainment a while to respond to the plagiarism police reports against Kpop singer-songwriter IU. That is because the agency had to check everything thoroughly. After all, apparently EDAM Entertainment hadn’t received official contact from the investigation agency. Instead, they knew about the official complaints through media reports.
According to EDAM Entertainment, the accuser had made plagiarism police reports against IU based on false information on the internet. It was simply groundless rumors, a part of severe degree malicious posts that had been happening for months.
Therefore, EDAM Entertainment is planning on taking strong legal action without leniency against such defamation. They will track down the publishers of the malicious posts and continue performing strong responses against thoughtless accusations based on false information.

Famous Composers Have Been Defending IU and Her Plagiarism Issue
This is not the first time IU has faced such false plagiarism issue. Previously, various prominent composers had even come to her defense. Producers Bang Si Hyuk (Hitman Bang or Bang PD) and Kim Hyung Seok even deliberately made statements defending IU against the plagiarism issues.
“To those who claim that IU’s ‘The Red Shoes’ is plagiarism, please know that music also has its own genres and clichés. If ‘The Red Shoes’ is considered plagiarism, then almost all swing jazz songs would also turn into plagiarized works.”

Meanwhile, on May 11 songwriters who worked behind IU songs, Lee Jong Hoon and Lee Min Soo, updated the public on the plagiarism scandal and accusations against the actress-idol.
“I denied the plagiarism issue against The Red Shoes via a press release in 2013 when the song came out. And I refrained from further commenting because I believed it would be pointless.”
