The new Korean drama starring Lee Young Ae, “Maestra,” has faced severe criticism for its storyline development. The disappointing storyline development of this music thriller drama was so unexpectedly corny that “Maestra” was deemed wasting the powerful presence of the great Lee Young Ae. So, what really happened behind this issue? Let us dive deeper into the criticism and find out whether these ideas align with your thoughts.
Korean Media Criticizes the Storyline of New Korean Drama, “Maestra,” Starring Lee Young Ae
The filming industry and devoted Korean drama enthusiasts have been highly anticipating the arrival of “Maestra: String of Truth” (a.k.a “Maestra”). Starring Lee Young Ae and Lee Moo Saeng, this music drama offers a fresh and promising new theme, raising conflicts and issues in the professional life of the orchestral music industry.
However, apparently, “Maestra” new Korean drama has reportedly failed to fulfill these expectations.
On January 14, Korean media TenAsia reported the alleged failure of the Korean drama “Maestra” to appease its viewers. This report dove deep into the underlying issue of why viewers were slowly leaving the series.
Apparently, it was all because of the disappointing storyline development that viewers had highly unexpected. As a result, this series only wasted the talents of its prominent cast members, including the great actress Lee Young Ae.
What Happened?
According to the report, “Maestra” started off grand and strong as one of the most enticing music dramas. However, as the story progressed in each episode, it started giving off a different vibe with various overwhelming issues.
Starting from the issue of the main couple’s extramarital affair, the new drama continued its conflicts with more extreme elements. Drugs, murder, and poison, the writer seemed to add all the corny aspects of makjang drama into what was supposed to be a powerful music drama.
Originally, “Maestra” was supposed to have impressive topics to raise, including the professional journey of a local team orchestra and the role of a female conductor. These two subjects themselves have already offered promising storylines. After all, viewers have expected to see how the female conductor and her orchestra team could overcome various challenges in an inspiring story. Not only that, it will be such an amazing experience to witness the gradually growing chemistry between the female conductor and her team, just like how it happened in “Beethoven Virus” and “Naeil’s Cantabile”.
Unexpectedly, the writer only made use of these two promising subjects as the baseline of corny crime and horrible action drama. Reports also criticized that “Maestra” had only wasted Lee Young Ae’s effort. As the story developed, the female conductor was only busy chasing the bad guy instead of focusing on her character’s and her team’s growth.
From Inspiring Story to Horrible Makjang Drama
Consequently, the horrible storyline development of “Maestra” allegedly wasted the talents and effort of actress Lee Young Ae.
Since the start of the new Korean drama, Lee Young Ae has been devotedly preparing for her role. She trained for a whole year under a prominent Korean conductor, learning the script’s songs twice a week. Indeed, she had thoroughly prepared herself to become a great female conductor and violinist in this new Korean drama.
Moreover, at some point in this training, Lee Young Ae even had to lie down sick because the extreme practice took a toll on her health.
Everything paid off in the beginning. “Maestra” new Korean drama showed off Lee Young Ae’s character with a strong charismatic presence during the early episodes. The use of vivid colors and diverse materials in her costumes added to the pleasure of viewing. Her cold, harsh demeanor on the stage, a departure from her usual elegant image, increased the drama’s immersion.
Unfortunately, it did not last very long.
Starting from episode 4, all the corny issues began to emerge. The writer seemed to pour all the corny issues from makjang drama into this new Korean drama: adultery, extramarital pregnancy, and incurable diseases.
Therefore, viewers expressed their massive disappointment. The disappointing development had ruined what was supposed to be an inspiring Korean drama.
In this process, the production team reduced the focus on the orchestra and Maestra stories. Instead, they shifted the central theme to drugs and murder crimes.
Consequently, the drama’s direction changed from ‘the inspiring growth of Maestra Cha and her team’ to ‘Who is the real culprit?’. What’s worse, the inspiring story immediately disappeared, and the orchestra team turned into a criminal group.
New Korean Drama “Maestra” Is Wasting Efforts and Talents of the Great Lee Young Ae?
Finally, Lee Young Ae’s conducting efforts, on which she had diligently worked for over a year, unfortunately, lost prominence after the broadcast’s initial scenes.
Despite her hard work, everything became a wasted opportunity. The drama, initially centered around Maestra, ended up overshadowing her with the focus on the murderer.
Although her remarkable transformation and acting prowess became the highlights, it was a shame that such a dedicated effort was overshadowed in a drama that lost its way.
