The Kpop 5th generation group ILLIT has truly been through a lot this year. After being the center of plagiarism issues and accusations of being a NewJeans copycat, the group must suffer from collateral damage from the massive dispute between HYBE and former ADOR CEO Min Heejin.
And yet, the controversy surrounding ILLIT members doesn’t just stop right there. For the second time after a massive change, ILLIT must face more backlash due to the new official fandom name.
Earlier this week, the Kpop 5th generation girl group ILLIT officially announced the change in its fandom name.
Previously, the group’s label BELIFT LAB of HYBE had faced numerous backlash and criticism after the group announced the initial fandom name, LILLY. According to several accusations, the company had stolen the name from several other idols and just blatantly claimed it as theirs.
Hence, on the first day of this month, BELIFT LAB finally announced the new official fandom name of ILLIT: “GLLIT.”According to the company, this new name came from the word “glitter” with the hope that ILLIT members will shine the brightest.

We want to thank all the fans who have been waiting for the announcement of ILLIT’s official fan club name.
After reviewing the many suggestions submitted by fans and discussing them thoroughly with the members of ILLIT, we have decided on a new name for the fan club.
GLLIT (Pronounced “Glit”)
Inspired by the word “glitter,” which means to sparkle and shine. It implies that the fans shine the brightest in ILLIT’s eyes and make ILLIT sparkle.”

MORE Controversy from International Fans: “Sounds Like NSFW”
While the new name might sound perfect and fitted for ILLIT’s sparkly and bubbly image, it doesn’t do really well internationally.
Following the announcement of this fandom name change, some fans protested that this new name just sounds like an NSFW term.
According to some fans, the name “Gllit” just sounds too similar to the abbreviation of the erectile female genital organ, the clitoris. Most people use the term as vulgar slang, and international fans still hope that the company does not continue with this name, especially when the Korean hangul has the same letter for “G” and “K.”

Yet, someone is trying to explain that it’s better to associate GLLIT with “Glitz and Glam” instead. Plus, from the literal Korean hangul translation, the word is actually pronounced “geulli.”
