Inside Chansung’s Bloodhounds 2 Netflix interview with Hwang Chansung

There’s a calm focus about Hwang Chansung when he walks into the room. No rush, no extra energy, just quiet control.  It’s the kind of presence that makes sense the moment Bloodhounds Season 2 comes up.

Now streaming on Netflix, the series returns with a darker edge, pushing its characters into harsher, more complex territory. For Chansung, it also marks a turning point. This time, he steps into a role that leans into tension and contradiction — a character shaped by pressure, discipline, and difficult choices.

Up close, he speaks the same way he approaches his work: measured, precise, but open.

There’s no clear line between the actor and the person, just a steady process of building, adjusting, and going deeper with each project.

At the same time, another stage is waiting. 2PM is set to take over Tokyo Dome in May

Different setting, different energy; but the same level of commitment.

We sit down and begin with the obvious question: how that journey has changed.

Evolving Acting Approach Across Projects

Q. You’ve built a steady acting career over the years. How has your approach to roles changed?

I started my acting career with a role in a sitcom, and that role used my actual name. So, it was a peculiar start to getting direction and developing a character that used the same name as me. I thought it was all really, fun. I instantly got hooked in preparing for a role and understanding a character.

My approach to roles has changed every project, because every project and every role is different. Of course, I learn my lines, try different nuances, and visualize in my head the character, but so much of it changes when you get to filming or even later. Also, every set has its own way of working so a lot of my approaches adapts to the director, to the crew, and to the project in general. My job is to get to work every day with 100% commitment and the work ethic to express my character as persuasively as I can. That’s the goal, which never changes, but the approach almost always does.

Why Bloodhounds 2 Was the Right Fit

Q. What drew you to join Bloodhounds Season 2?

In many ways, Bloodhounds Season 2 was a great opportunity for me. I’ve known Director Kim Joo-Hwan personally for over 10 years now, and we’ve always said we should work together when the right project comes along. This seemed just that. I’ve never been cast as a villain, and creatively too, this role seemed like the perfect chance for me to explore new dimensions.

Director Kim and I talked a lot about the character from the pre-production phase, and the more time I spent on developing the character, the more attached I became with the role. From then on, it was a fun process of filling in the blanks of this role both emotionally and physically.

Inside Yoon Tae-Geom’s Complex Character

Q. Without giving spoilers, how would you describe your character to viewers?

I play Yoon Tae-Geom, the right-hand man of the main villain, Baek-Jeong. Tae-Geom is a former Special Forces sergeant who was dishonourably discharged and is now using his skill set as an enforcer of a very bad person. Tae-Geom gets the job done and gets his hands dirty, but he’s doing all this for his family; which sets him apart. He’s a conflicted character, both and in mindset.

Physical Training and Mental Preparation

Q. How did you prepare for this role, both physically and mentally?

Other than conditioning my physique, I began training boxing, ju-jitsu, martial arts, and choreography — all of which felt daunting at first, but it became fun as I learned all these new techniques and enjoyed the process of sharpening my skills. The action in season 1 was intense and polished, so I knew I had a lot of work cut out for me to maintain that quality. Learning the kicks was especially challenging because it’s difficult to make a kick look painful while it isn’t. Also, if I can’t control it, it could lead to a serious injury.

Mentally, it was a lot of visualizing the role and the situation and pressure he’s put in. He’s a character who’s always under immense stress. He’s always on edge. He’s battling these different emotions and drives, but, in the end, Tae-Geom is a husband and father who’s willing to go to any depths to keep his family safe. That’s an aspect of the character that I can really relate to, so I took that piece from myself and used it to paint the rest of the picture.

Filming Challenges in Extreme Conditions

Q. The series is known for its intense action. What was the most challenging part for you?

I shot two major action sequences — one during the peak of winter and the other in the peak of summer. The scene shot in winter wasn’t winter in the script, which meant we had to dress light and keep ourselves warmed up constantly, steam coming off our bodies like we were evaporating. The tunnel scene was shot in the summer, which was already bad. But, for lighting reasons, the tunnel had to be completely blocked without ventilation. I was tanned for the scene, but everybody was concerned because I was looking extremely sick and pale. I enjoyed every minute of shooting, but those two sequences were challenging.

Discovering New Layers in the Character

Q. Was there a moment during filming that made you see your character differently?

There were two interesting moments — one towards the beginning and one towards the end. The first moment came when I realized that I needed to re-assess just how much the Special Forces background has shaped my character. I knew Tae-Geom was an expert who didn’t let emotions get to his ability to complete his tasks, but I realized just how quick he is at processing situations. He is like a machine — always gathering information and making judgements.

So, with this, I developed a character who kept his feelings on a tight leash and never showed his true emotions. But, towards the end, I found new aspects of the character that was really heated and full of intense emotion. Which makes sense — he’s the character with the most at stake, the well-being of his loved ones.

On-Set Atmosphere and Team Commitment

Q. How was the atmosphere on set working with this cast?

The atmosphere was never not good. Everybody was 100% committed. Nobody was complaining. I think everybody knew that it was crucial to stay focused, because if we’re not, somebody gets hurt. Also, we wanted the action to look convincing and there’s no way to achieve that without taking some hits. So, at some point during the action sequence, we were telling each other, “Hit me. Just hit me.” Nobody complained, because all of us were leaving the set with cuts and bruises. I think we all knew that when the intensity rose and we were in sync, it was important not to miss that timing.

Balancing Music and Acting Careers

Q. As someone balancing music and acting, how do you shift between the two mindsets?

There’s no real shift in mindset. Both music and acting brings out my focus, commitment, and discipline. The real difference between the two comes in how I enjoy those two different things. In music, the end-goal is always the stage. This means the returns to all my hard work is instant. I see how much our fans enjoy our stage. The dopamine and adrenaline rush is insane. There’s nothing quite like the rush of taking a stage in front of tens of thousands of fans.

In acting, the joy comes in different shapes at different stages. There’s the joy of studying and researching a role and materializing my vision as an actor. The actual feedback to my work in acting comes months later, so it’s a gradual rise in anticipation. It’s very exciting, but also unnerving in a way.

Future Roles and Creative Aspirations

Q. Looking ahead, what kinds of roles do you want to explore next?

Tae-Geom was a beautiful opportunity for me to dive deep into a character who has a lot to lose, a lot to hide, and a lot to fight for. In the future, I want to go further into diving deep into a character’s inner psychology and complexity. Such a role would be enjoyable for me to explore, and I think I would have a lot more to show to the audience.

2PM Tokyo Dome Concert Expectations

Q. 2PM has an upcoming anniversary concert. What can fans expect this time?

It’s crazy, but it’s been 15 years since we debuted in Japan. To celebrate with our fans, 2PM will take the stage on May 9th and 10th at the iconic Tokyo Dome. All the members and I gave a lot of thought on song selection, because there’s so many that we wanted to showcase.

Normally, we would arrange the songs to give ourselves some room to breathe in between, but we decided that would be inappropriate this time. All the songs are our biggest hits and most intense dance songs, which means 2PM is going to dance like we’ve never danced on a stage before.

It’s come to our attention that the more we sweat and exhaust ourselves on the stage, the more our fans enjoy it. So, I think it would be safe to say that our fans would really enjoy our stage coming May.

Hwang Chansung Between Screen and Stage: A Deliberate Evolution

Hwang Chansung Interview
Interview with Hwang Chansung

With Bloodhounds Season 2 now out, Hwang Chansung’s shift feels clear. Not loud, not sudden, but deliberate. The kind that comes from time, repetition, and knowing when to push further. His role in the series doesn’t just add to his filmography; it shows a willingness to step into discomfort and carry a character that sits in a morally grey space.

What stands out is how consistent his mindset remains. Whether it’s building a character over months or stepping onto a stage in front of thousands, the approach doesn’t change. Focus, discipline, and commitment. The difference is in the payoff. Acting unfolds slowly, often in silence. Music responds instantly, in real time.

That contrast becomes more visible now. As Bloodhounds reaches a global audience through Netflix, 2PM prepares to take the stage at Tokyo Dome on May 9 and 10.

Two spaces, two different rhythms; but both demanding the same level of intensity.

And maybe that’s where Hwang Chansung is most comfortable.

In the in-between.

Moving from one world to the other, without needing to separate them too much. On screen, he holds everything in. On stage, he lets it all out.

Both feel like natural extensions of where he is now: still evolving but grounded in the work.
