The Actor Who Never Forgot Where It All Began

There are actors who chase the spotlight, and then there are actors who simply chase good stories. Jin Sun-kyu belongs firmly in the second group.

For nearly two decades, he quietly built one of the most respected careers in Korean entertainment. Long before international audiences knew his name, he was perfecting his craft in theater, learning that every performance—whether in front of ten people or ten million—deserved complete honesty. That dedication eventually led to memorable roles in film and television, a reputation as one of Korea’s most versatile performers, and this year, another milestone with a Baeksang Arts Awards nomination.

Yet speaking with him, it quickly becomes clear that awards and recognition are only part of the story.

There is an unmistakable warmth in the way he talks about acting. He doesn’t measure success by trophies or box office numbers. Instead, he speaks about people—his fellow actors, longtime friends, and collaborators who have remained by his side since his theater days. They are the foundation of his career and, even now, the people whose opinions matter most.

As Netflix’s “Husbands In Action” introduces him to even more viewers around the world, Jin Sun-kyu remains refreshingly grounded. Whether discussing his earliest performances, his latest recognition, or the action-comedy audiences are about to enjoy, his answers are thoughtful, humble, and often sprinkled with quiet humor.

The Stage Never Left Him

Many actors look back at their theater years with nostalgia. For Jin Sun-kyu, theater isn’t simply a memory—it is still the place that defines him.

When I asked what those early years continue to mean to him, his answer came without hesitation.

“The time I spent on stage has been one of the most important parts of my acting career,” he says. “It isn’t just something from the past. Even now, the stage remains the most important place for my future as an actor.”

It’s a beautiful way of looking at an art form that often receives less attention than television or film. For him, the theater wasn’t simply where he learned technique. It was where he learned collaboration.

Creating stories together with fellow actors made him feel alive, he explains, and that same energy continues to drive every role he accepts today. Perhaps even more touching is the fact that those same colleagues remain part of his life.

“They are still my greatest critics and my strongest supporters.”

No Backup Plan Needed

The entertainment industry is filled with stories of actors who almost gave up before finally getting their big break.

Jin Sun-kyu’s story is surprisingly different.

When I asked if there had ever been a moment when he questioned his career, he smiled through his words.

“I have never once thought about quitting acting.”

That answer alone says a great deal about his mindset.

Of course, those early years were far from easy. Like many theater actors, financial stability wasn’t guaranteed. But while money was limited, something much more valuable kept him going.

His fellow performers.

He recalls creating their own productions, building stages together, and pushing their imagination as far as it could go.

“Those were the happiest times,” he says.

It’s not often you hear someone describe struggling years as the happiest period of their life. But for Jin Sun-kyu, success wasn’t something waiting at the finish line. It was already happening every time he stepped onto a stage with people who believed in the same dream.

Listening to him, it becomes clear that this perspective still shapes the way he approaches every project today.

Redefining Success

Success means different things to different people.

For some actors, it’s awards.
For others, it’s starring roles.
For Jin Sun-kyu, the definition is surprisingly simple.

“I never worked with the idea of achieving success through the final result,” he tells me.

Instead, he goes back to something much more personal.

Twenty years ago, he helped establish a theater company with friends—not because they expected recognition, but because they wanted to create together.

That experience, he says, already felt like success.

Even today, being able to continue working alongside many of those same people is something he treasures more than any accolade.

His ultimate goal isn’t necessarily to collect more awards or headlines.

Instead, he hopes to keep creating meaningful work with people he trusts.

Perhaps the most memorable thing he says during our conversation is this:

“Even when I grow old, having colleagues who can evaluate my acting and work in harmony with me—that may be what it means to live the life of a successful actor.”

It is a thoughtful answer from someone who has spent years quietly earning the respect of both audiences and fellow actors alike.

And maybe that’s exactly why Jin Sun-kyu’s career continues to resonate.

Because while the industry often celebrates overnight success, he reminds us that the strongest careers are built over time—with patience, passion, and people who never stop believing in each other.

A Baeksang Moment Worth Celebrating

Awards can change careers. Sometimes they change how audiences see an actor. Other times, they simply become a reminder that years of hard work have not gone unnoticed.

For Jin Sun-kyu, this year’s Baeksang Arts Awards nomination was less about chasing a trophy and more about celebrating a character he genuinely loved bringing to life.

When I asked what went through his mind after hearing the news, his excitement was impossible to miss.

“I was truly happy that a project featuring a character I loved so much was nominated,” he says. “Aema gave me the chance to play a very different character, and it is one of the most memorable and charming roles in my career.”

Rather than talking about prestige or recognition, he immediately returned to the character itself. It perfectly reflects the kind of actor he is. For Jin Sun-kyu, every role begins with the story, not the accolades that may follow.

More Than a Trophy

Being nominated for one of Korea’s most prestigious acting awards naturally brings new expectations. I wondered whether that recognition had changed the way he now looks at future projects.

His answer was both honest and humble.

“I think being nominated for an award is, in itself, a meaningful milestone in my journey as an actor,” he says. “Of course, I wanted to win, but simply being there as a nominee was truly an honor.”

It’s the kind of response that perfectly matches the person behind it.

Throughout our conversation, there was never a sense that Jin Sun-kyu was trying to prove himself. Instead, he seemed genuinely grateful simply to be recognized alongside fellow actors he respects.

Perhaps that mindset explains why audiences continue to connect with his performances. Recognition is appreciated, but it has never become the reason he acts.

The Art of Becoming Someone Else

Few Korean actors move between genres as naturally as Jin Sun-kyu.

One year he’s terrifying audiences as a ruthless villain. The next he’s making them laugh, moving them to tears, or surprising them with another completely unexpected role.

I asked whether he feels people recognize him more for his versatility or for something deeper.

His answer revealed exactly what motivates him every time he steps onto a set.

“I especially enjoy letting go of myself and seeing the world through the eyes of a new character.”

It’s a remarkably simple explanation for something audiences often describe as transformation.

He continues by saying that he feels grateful people also recognize his effort to find each character’s inner sincerity, no matter how different they may appear on screen.

That sincerity has become one of the defining qualities of his work. Even in the most outrageous situations, his characters rarely feel exaggerated. Instead, they feel believable because he always searches for the emotional truth beneath the performance.

That ability is exactly what makes his latest project so intriguing.

When the Script Makes You Smile

The premise of “Husbands In Action” is unlike anything we’ve seen in recent Korean action-comedies.

An ex-husband. A current husband.

An unexpected partnership. A family worth fighting for.

It sounds delightfully chaotic—and that’s exactly what first caught Jin Sun-kyu’s attention.

“What appealed to me most was the premise itself,” he tells me.

The unusual partnership between the former husband and the current husband immediately stood out, but that wasn’t all.

He also loved how naturally the comedy grew from the characters and their relationships instead of relying on forced jokes.

“The director’s unique style of dialogue was also something I really enjoyed,” he says.

In fact, he admits he wanted to join the project as soon as he finished reading the script.

Adding to the excitement was director Park Gyu-tae, whose previous comedy “6/45” had already made Jin Sun-kyu a fan.

“I really enjoyed 6/45, so I was excited to work with him.”

It’s easy to understand why “Husbands In Action” appealed to him. It combines fast-paced action with genuine humor while placing family relationships at the center of the story—a balance that fits perfectly with his strengths as an actor.

Action Isn’t Getting Any Easier

Although audiences know Jin Sun-kyu for fully committing to physically demanding roles, he admits action scenes aren’t becoming any easier.

In fact, quite the opposite.

When I asked whether the emotional scenes or the action sequences proved more challenging, his answer came with a laugh.

“The action scenes,” he says. “I’m starting to realize that I’m getting older.”

It’s an answer that feels wonderfully relatable.

Action films often make stunt work look effortless, but behind every punch, chase, and fight sequence are countless rehearsals, careful choreography, and long shooting days.

Even so, watching the trailers for “Husbands In Action,” it’s hard to imagine anyone noticing that challenge on screen.

Jin Sun-kyu still throws himself into every scene with the same energy audiences have come to expect.

The difference is that now he can joke about it afterward.

Sometimes, experience comes with wisdom—and occasionally with sore muscles.

The Perfect Partner in Crime

One of the biggest draws of Husbands In Action is the unlikely relationship at its core.

What happens when your ex-husband and your current husband are forced to work together?

It’s an idea packed with comedic potential but making that dynamic believable depends entirely on chemistry. Fortunately, Jin Sun-kyu already had a head start.

When I asked how he and co-star Gong Myung developed their on-screen partnership, he immediately pointed to their shared history.

“Since I had already worked with Gong Myung a long time ago, we were able to communicate and share everything with each other very smoothly.”

That familiarity created an easy rhythm from the beginning, but he was equally quick to praise the rest of the cast.

Although it was his first time working with several of them, he says everyone brought generosity and respect to the set.

“They were all such good people and very considerate in helping their scene partners bring out their best performances.”

It’s an answer that says a lot about Jin Sun-kyu himself. Throughout our conversation, he consistently shifted the spotlight away from himself and toward the people around him.

Even when discussing the film’s chemistry, he credits the director.

“I believe casting is also one of the director’s great abilities. I would like to sincerely thank him for bringing these wonderful actors together and making such a great film.”

It’s the kind of humility that seems to follow him wherever he goes.

Making Audiences Laugh… and Hold Their Breath

Blending action and comedy sounds fun on paper.

Actually making it work is another story.

Both genres rely on timing. Miss a beat during an action sequence and the tension disappears. Miss a beat during a joke and so does the laughter.

So naturally, I was curious whether one side demanded more attention than the other.

For Jin Sun-kyu, choosing between them wasn’t really an option.

“Timing is probably one of the most important aspects of both action and comedy acting.”

Rather than focusing on one over the other, he says he approached both with equal care.

He wanted the action scenes to deliver excitement.

He wanted the comedic moments to leave audiences smiling.

“I didn’t want to lose either element, so both were equally important.”

That philosophy perfectly captures what “Husbands In Action” promises to be.

It’s an action film. It’s a comedy.

Most importantly, it never forgets to have fun.

One Scene He Can’t Forget

Every actor has that one moment from filming that stays with them long after production ends.

For Jin Sun-kyu, the answer came almost instantly.

Without revealing spoilers, he pointed to a sequence set inside a freezer warehouse, where the two husbands find themselves pushing beyond their limits to rescue their family.

“The freezer scene is the one that comes to mind the most,” he says.

Even better?

“I remember laughing a lot while filming it.”

That’s perhaps the biggest clue about “Husbands In Action.”

Yes, there are fights.

Yes, there are high-stakes moments.

But underneath all of that is a cast clearly enjoying themselves.

And when actors are having fun together, audiences usually feel it too.

At Its Heart, It’s About Family

Action. Comedy. Unexpected partnerships

While those elements make Husbands In Action entertaining, Jin Sun-kyu believes the emotional core is much simpler.

Family.

When I asked how he hopes audiences remember his character after leaving the film, his answer couldn’t have been more fitting.

“A sweet and lovable husband who cares deeply for his family.”

It’s a wonderfully understated description.

Not an action hero. Not a fearless detective.

Not someone trying to save the world.

Simply someone who loves his family enough to fight for them.

That emotional foundation is what transforms Husbands In Action from another action-comedy into something more relatable.

The Final Take

After spending time talking with Jin Sun-kyu, one thing becomes abundantly clear.

The actor audiences see on screen is remarkably similar to the person behind the interviews.

He’s thoughtful without trying to sound profound.

Funny without forcing jokes.

Confident without ever appearing arrogant.

Perhaps that’s why his performances feel so genuine. Whether he’s playing a villain, a detective, or, in this case, an ex-husband reluctantly teaming up with his successor, he always searches for the human side of the character first.

His 2026 Baeksang Arts Awards nomination is another well-earned milestone in a career built patiently over many years, but speaking with him, it feels less like a destination than another step forward.

As for “Husbands In Action,” it has all the ingredients for an entertaining ride: explosive action, sharp comedy, heartfelt family moments, and a cast that clearly enjoyed every minute of making it.

If Jin Sun-kyu gets his wish, audiences won’t just remember the laughs or the action.

They’ll remember a lovable man who would do anything for his family.

And after our conversation, I’d say they’ll remember the actor behind him, too.
