A Korean romance-thriller movie “Decision to Leave” (2022) by director Park Chan Wook will represent South Korea in the best international feature film section at the Academy Awards next year.

On August 11, the Korean Film Council announced that “Decision to Leave,” a movie directed by Park Chan Wook, will be shown in the best international feature category for the upcoming Oscars. In this category, one country can only submit one film.
“Decision to Leave” is a Korean movie in 2022 with Chinese star Tang Wei and Korean actor Park Hae Il as the main cast. The story centered on police investigator Hae Jun. He is investigating the mysterious death of a man who was discovered dead after falling from a mountain. During the investigation, he develops feelings for a mysterious suspect. The mysterious suspect is the deceased man’s wife: a Chinese widow named Seo Rae (Tang Wei.)
According to director Park Chan Wook, the movie was inspired by the systematic police work portrayed in the Swedish “Martin Beck” crime thriller books.
2022 Cannes Film Festival Winner for Best Director
“Decision to Leave” was one of two Korean movies that competed at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival. The mystery noir film earned Park Chan Wook the Best Director award at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival. The winning named him the second South Korean director to win the category after Im Kwon Taek in 2002 for his historical drama “Chihwaseon.”
His latest winning is his third win at the film festival. In 2003, his movie “Oldboy” won the second-highest prize, the Grand Prix, at the film festival. And in 2009, his iconic horror movie “Thirst” won the Jury Prize.
The 95th Academy Awards will take place at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, California, on March 12, 2023.
