Confirmed! Hit KDrama “Itaewon Class” Starring Park Seo Joon and Kim Da Mi to Have Japanese Remake
On March 24, JTBC Studio announced that the company had signed an agreement with Kakao Entertainment and a leading Japanese broadcasting company to remake the webtoon-based drama “Itaewon Clas” into the Japanese version.
In addition, JTBC Studio, Kakao Entertainment, and Kross Pictures, a subsidiary of Kakao Entertainment, will collaborate to carry out support for the filming based on the experience of the original.
“Itaewon Class” Webtoon-Based KDrama
Kdrama “Itaewon Class” is based on the Kakao Entertainment webtoon of the same title and cast by young actors such as Park Seo Joon, Kim Da Mi, Kwon Na Ra, Yoo Jae Myung, Ahn Bo Hyun, and more.
The drama is a slice of life drama that revolves around love, loss, friendships, business, success, family, and more. The story follows Park Sae Ro Yi, a young man who ran a business named DamBam and has to compete with a powerful businessman Jang Dae Hee, the founder of Jangga Group. After punching a bully, he dropped out of school, and his father got killed in an accident.
However, instead of drowning in his sorrowful life, he aims to start a new life after being released from prison. He then opens a pub called “DamBam” in Itaewon. However, in establishing his business, he also has another intention to take revenge. With his passionate pub manager, who is also a genius and an influencer, Jo Yi Seo (Kim Da Mi), and other staff, they struggle hard to maintain the business and achieve great success.
“Itaewon Class” Achievements
The Kdrama reached the highest nationwide viewership ratings of 16,5 percent, and it’s in the third rank of popular Kdrama in JTBC. With its popularity, the drama won the Best Drama Series Award at the 2020 Asia Television Awards. Meanwhile, actress Kim Da Mi, who played Jo Yi Seo, took home the Best New Actress award at the 56th Baeksang Arts Awards in 2020.

“Itaewon Class” new title is “Roppongi Class” in Japanese Version
“Itaewon Class” was not only popular in South Korea but also very popular in foreign countries, including Japan. The series was distributed in Japan through Netflix in March 2020 and became a significant hit.
Park Sae Ro Yi, a young man with strong faith and will, has spread a message of hope to young people worldwide, including in Japan. Earlier, the “Itaewon Class” webtoon had entered the Japanese digital manga platform “Piccoma,” which operated by Kakao Piccoma Corporation under the title “Roppongi Class” and has gained popularity.
With the high popularity of the drama “Itaewon Class” in Japan, the demand to have remake production in the Japanese version has been increasing among Japanese fans.
Last year, a Japanese magazine conducted a survey for Kdrama fans in Japan to vote for Kdramas they would like to have in the Japanese version. As a result, “Itaewon Class” took the No.2 after “What’s Wrong Secretary Kim” at No.1.

The Japanese version of “Itaewon Class” is titled ‘Roppongi Class’ (tentative title). The filming will start next month for 13 episodes and is scheduled to be premiered this summer.
The adaptation is still using the name of a popular area where many foreign cultures fused like Itaewon. In Japan, it will take place in Roppongi. The area is a lively area for entertainment and dining in southeastern Tokyo.
“Roppongi Class” Cast – Who will be the next Park Sae Ro Yi and other roles?
“Itaewon Class” cast, Park Se Joon and Kim Da Mi, gained sympathy from the viewers, and their popularity increased because of the solid story development. In addition, many things in the drama have attracted the viewers’ attention.
Such as Park Sae Ro Yi’s unique hairstyle, famous lines, and OSTs, including BTS V’s self-produced song, “Sweet Night.”
Moreover, the “Roppongi Class” cast is reportedly to be top-class Japanese actors. As reported last year by Japanese media outlets, Weekly Women, actor Takeuchi Ryoma has been nominated to play the Japanese version of Park Sae-Ro Yi. Another nominated name is Taisuke Fujigaya of the idol group Kis-My-Ft2.
Meanwhile, other names are also rumored to play the role of Jo Yi Seo and Oh Soo Ah. Actress and model Yurina Hirate, a former Keyakizaka46, and actress Sairi Ito are nominated to play the role of Jo Yo Seo.
Moreover, Rino Sashihara, a former member of AKB48, then actresses turned to models, Yuko Araki and Ayami Nakajo, are nominated to play the role of Oh Soo Ah, Park Sae Ro Yi’s first love.
