Furthermore, the upcoming K-drama “Petty Love” will be a new collaboration between director Kim Ga Ram and writer Jung Yeo Rang. Both are well-known South Korean female creators of hit series.
Two of director Kim Ga Ram’s notable works are “Nevertheless” (2021) and “Good Partner” (2024). According to Nielsen Korea, the final episode of “Good Partner” achieved a record-high viewership of 15.2 percent.
Meanwhile, writer Jung Yeo Rang’s popular drama is “Doctor Cha” (2023), which is also her debut project. According to Nielsen Korea, The series achieved a record-high viewership of 18.5 percent.
“Petty Love”
“Petty Love” explores the love-hate conflict and entertaining romance between two individuals. The male protagonist is an actor whose career has reached a dead end, longing to become a rom-com prince. Meanwhile, the female lead is a former political journalist who struggles to adapt after being assigned as an entertainment journalist.
Lee Jung Jae and Lim Ji Yeon’s Roles
Lee Jung Jae as Im Hyun Joon
Im Hyun Joon is a seasoned actor. However, people know his on-screen character as the righteous detective Kang Pil-goo better than his real name. He has played the character of detective Kang Pil-goo on the popular show “Good Detective Kang Pil-goo” for four seasons. Soon, it will enter its fifth season.
However, after playing the same role for several years, he felt bored and stressed. This situation made him want to change his image and hope to take on different roles. He wants to change his image from a righteous detective to a “melodrama expert” or “romantic comedy prince.”
The upcoming role will mark actor Lee Jung Jae’s return to domestic television in a romantic comedy for the first time since “Triple” in 2009.
Lim Ji Yeon as Wi Jeong Shin
Wi Jeong Shin is a journalist. During her eight-year career, she covered political news and won the Journalist of the Year award. However, an unexpected event occurred when she bravely covered a corruption case, which led her boss to assign her to the entertainment division. This shift forced her to adjust from serious journalism to the vibrant entertainment world.
When she started her work as an entertainment journalist, she finally met the star she secretly admired, Im Hyun Joon. Since then, Jeong Shin has shifted from a life centered on news to one brimming with fans.
With her new role, Kdrama fans hope she can show a more diverse acting spectrum, from a strong antagonist in a dramatic melodrama in “The Glory” to the female lead in a romantic comedy.
Release Date
According to reports, “Petty Love” has finalized its main cast and will begin filming. It is expected to air next year. In addition, the channel for the upcoming rom-com drama “Petty Love” is currently under discussion.
Wide Age-Gap: Is It A Problem?
Following the casting news, some K-drama fans think this pairing may not match due to the age gap.
Veteran actor Lee Jung Jae and rising star Lim Ji Yeon share a wide 18-year age gap. Lee Jung Jae, born on December 15, 1972, will celebrate his 52nd birthday this December, while Lim Ji Yeon, born on June 23, 1990, turns 34 this year.
On the other hand, many also argue that there is no age limit in acting since the age difference could create unique chemistry on-screen. Furthermore, numerous K-dramas feature leading actors with significant age differences, such as “Everglow,” starring Go Doo Shim and Ji Hyun Woo, “My Mister” starring IU and late actor Lee Sun Kyun (18-year age gap), and “Mr. Sunshine” starring Lee Byung Hun and Kim Tae Ri (20-year age gap).
Given these points, what do you think about the pairing of Lee Jung Jae and Lim Ji Yeon in the upcoming romantic comedy K-drama? If you disagree with their age difference, who would you suggest as the male or female lead? Please share with us in the comments below!
