Interview: Jackson Wang on “MAGICMAN 2”, Music, and Mental Healing

In an emotional and honest interview, Jackson Wang opened up about the personal meaning behind MAGICMAN 2.
Q: What is MAGICMAN?
Jackson Wang: MAGICMAN is me—it’s the part of me I used to run from. I created this character as a way to introduce my truest self, the one behind the spotlight. For a long time, I didn’t want to face that side. But during a year-long break, I spent a lot of time with myself… and with MAGICMAN.
Since I was a kid, I’ve never stopped—athlete, trainee, boy group, solo artist, entrepreneur, creative director. I was always on the move. But all that pressure, the betrayals, pain, and loneliness built up something dark inside.
Sometimes, I didn’t even know who I was anymore—just floating with life. That’s what MAGICMAN is: deep, dark, raw. People ask, “Why the makeup? Can he look more ‘put together’?” But this is real. I want to show that side of me to my fans. No filters.
Q: Why did you create the album MAGICMAN2?
Jackson Wang: I’ve dedicated everything to my work over the past decade. And yeah, I met people I trusted with everything—but life hits hard. Business, reality, human nature… that trust broke into pieces.
I spiraled. I drank every day. I thought about giving up completely. So I took time off—just me and my thoughts. I started journaling every emotion, every scar. That process helped me heal.
Eventually, those words turned into songs. I wasn’t chasing “cool” or trends—I was just trying to be honest. MAGICMAN2 came from a real place. It’s the most me I’ve ever put into music.

Q: What do the four chapters of the album represent?
Jackson Wang: They’re the story of my breakdown and rebuild. I debuted at 19, and it’s been a wild ride. These four chapters reflect that:
- Manic Highs: The thrill, the escape, the illusion.
- Realization: The moment you wake up and ask, “What’s happening to me?”
- Losing Control: When everything crashes, and you’re staring into the void.
- Acceptance: Where you finally breathe, forgive yourself, and heal.
This album is how I climbed out of my lowest point. It’s not just music—it’s my journey.

Q: What’s a special memory from making the album?
Jackson Wang: Man, those studio nights… they were magic. Me and my team, we built this thing from zero. Some nights, we’d still be recording at 3 or 4 AM.
But what made it special was how real everyone was. We shared everything—our stories, pain, secrets. No egos. Just truth.
That kind of trust? It’s rare. I’m so thankful I had people around me who believed in the vision and gave it their all.
Q: What was most memorable during the creative process?
Jackson Wang: Honestly? The tears. Some songs took forever—recording, scrapping, redoing. I was pushing past my old styles, challenging what I thought I could do.
There were moments I broke down writing lyrics—because they came straight from the core.
I kept asking myself, “Am I being real enough?” That self-doubt hurt, but it also helped me grow. It taught me to face who I really am, flaws and all.
Q: How would you describe MM2?
Jackson Wang: It’s an emotional rollercoaster. Highs, lows, vulnerability, strength—all of it. Some people say it’s dark. To me, it’s just honest.
Every track is a mirror reflecting a part of my life. If there’s one theme running through it, it’s acceptance—of the pain, the growth, and who I’ve become.
I needed to make this album. I poured my soul into it. And yeah, it was painful—but I loved every second of it.
Q: What do you hope listeners feel after hearing the album?
Jackson Wang: I hope they feel less alone. We all go through rough patches—confusion, heartbreak, doubt. I’ve been there.
I just want people to know: if you face yourself honestly, you will find your own way.
I’m not chasing charts or sales. I’m sharing my story, hoping someone out there feels seen.
If everyone else is serving apples, I made a kiwi. It’s different. Might take a second to get used to. But if you take a bite… I hope you feel something real.
Q: Which song is the most meaningful to you?
Jackson Wang: Every song is a chapter of my life. But Sophie Ricky… that one’s for my parents—my heroes. I named it after them. They didn’t even hear it before the album dropped. That track is filled with love.
GBAD is another heavy one. I wrote it when I was at rock bottom. I couldn’t even say those things to my closest friends—but I could say it in a song.
Sometimes you gotta protect your heart, set boundaries. GBAD was a turning point for me. It’s raw, and it’s real.
Q: What’s next after the album release?
Jackson Wang: World tour. I’m bringing MM2 to more places—maybe even India this time. There are so many fans I haven’t met yet.
I also want to work with new artists and keep making music that means something.
And for the tour? I’m thinking of cinematic vibes, perhaps incorporating new elements to bring the MAGICMAN world to life. So yeah—stay tuned. We’re just getting started.
