The new 2025 Korean film “No Other Choice” (어쩔수가없다) is Park Chan-wook’s latest masterpiece. It perfectly blends satire, thriller, and black comedy with a nail-biting thriller plot. This 2025 Korean film dives deep into the desperation of a man pushed to his limits in a ruthless job market.

Starring Lee Byung-hun and Son Ye-jin, the film is more than just entertainment. It is a sharp social commentary wrapped in suspense and dark humor. Park’s direction and a clever screenplay co-written with Lee Kyoung-mi, Jahye Lee, and Canadian writer Don McKellar bring a fresh, global perspective to the story.

Synopsis

You Man-soo is a loyal paper industry specialist. He gave his 25 years to his company. However, his world shatters when his company suddenly fires him.

With a family to support and time running out, Man-soo searches for work but faces endless dead ends. After a year of rejections, Man-soo faces losing his home.

Then, one day, he finds a perfect job opening—but he sees many other qualified applicants. Desperation turns deadly. To secure the job, he decides to eliminate his job rivals—literally.

His chilling mantra, ‘No Other Choice,’ echoes throughout the film. It illustrates how intense pressure can warp the human spirit.

The movie cleverly balances tragic reality with sharp, often biting humor, making you both cringe and root for Man-soo’s survival.

The Korean adaptation film “No Other Choice” features a strong, multi-layered cast in leading and supporting roles. Together, they portray complex characters who add depth to the tense, darkly comedic world surrounding the desperate protagonist.

Lee Byung-hun plays You Man-soo, perfectly capturing the pain and quiet rage of a desperate man who becomes an unlikely criminal. Once again, the “Squid Game” star showcases his stunning performance as a covert menace, a masterclass in subtle acting.

Son Ye-jin portrays Mi-ri. This film marks her grand return to the big screen after seven years since her 2018 film “The Negotiation,” where she co-starred with her now husband, Hyun Bin. In “No Other Choice,” she plays Man-soo’s supportive yet conflicted wife. She provides the story’s emotional heart, showing the human cost of her husband’s choices.

The talented cast also includes Park Hee-soon, Lee Sung-min, Yeom Hye-ran, Cha Seung-won, and Yoo Yeon-seok. Each delivers a powerful performance that adds essential layers to this intense story.

Behind the Scenes

Park Chan-wook, the renowned director and writer of Korean hit movies, “Oldboy” and “The Handmaiden,” co-wrote and directed “No Other Choice.”

This film is an adaptation of Donald Westlake’s novel “The Ax.” This dark premise gains new life with Korean cultural depth and Park Chan-wook’s sharp eye for tension. It took nearly 20 years for him to bring this adaptation to life, showing his commitment to this poignant story.

He teamed with Lee Kyoung-mi, Jahye Lee, and Canadian writer Don McKellar, whose comedic sensibilities cross cultural lines, making the dark comedy resonate worldwide.

The film premiered and made a huge impact at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival on August 29, 2025. Then, it made a grand entrance at the 30th Busan International Film Festival as the opening film on September 17, 2025.

Its global acclaim is evident—this film holds a 100% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes. In addition, the film has already been chosen as South Korea’s submission for the 2026 Oscars for Best International Feature.
