Ernest Woo Says Tappytoon’s Webby Win Belongs to the Fans

For Woo, the People’s Voice Award was ultimately driven by the readers themselves.

“The People’s Voice win was, in itself, our community banding together and showing up,” Woo said. “Again we’re immensely thankful for that support.”

Unlike traditional industry awards decided solely by judges, the People’s Voice category depends heavily on fan participation. According to Woo, the victory reinforced how deeply connected Tappytoon’s readers are to both the platform and its stories.

Now, the company wants to build even stronger interactions between fans, creators, and storytelling experiences.

“Our priority now is to give them more reasons to show up for each other, not just for the next chapter drop.”

Ernest Woo.

He added that Tappytoon aims to “tighten the loop between readers and creators” while increasing “visibility for fans around the series.”

Woo also noted that modern webtoon fandoms no longer engage with stories through a single format. Readers today move naturally between webtoons, web novels, animation, live-action adaptations, short-form videos, and physical merchandise connected to the same intellectual property.

“Many fans move fluidly between webtoon, novel, and other adaptations of the same title,” Woo said. “We’re exploring ways to share in that excitement both on and off the Tappytoon platform.”

As part of that strategy, Tappytoon is increasing its offline presence through events such as Anime NYC while also expanding merchandise offerings through its official store, Club JEM.

“IRL and that tangible connection is also important. Over the years, we’ve learned there are a lot more reasons and methods that our fans can converge on.”

Ernest Woo.

In addition to winning the People’s Voice Award, Tappytoon also earned recognition for Best Visual Design – Function, reflecting the platform’s focus on intuitive story discovery.

Woo explained that discovering a webtoon begins with emotional response long before readers start scrolling through episodes.

“Story discovery starts with the cover art. The look of the protagonists, their poses, the facial expressions, colors — that first impression kicks off a mood or emotion.”

Ernest Woo.

He described how readers instinctively react to visual cues.

“Am I drawn to the embrace, a playful smirk, or an intense gaze? Is it humorous, longing, or determination?”

Ernest Woo.

However, Tappytoon’s design philosophy goes beyond aesthetics alone. According to Woo, recommendation systems, tags, rankings, homepage placement, and curated sections all work together quietly in the background.

“Beyond the art, the surrounding system and functional signals like tags, ranking, where a series is shown on the screen, how some are grouped together or sectioned off, tells you why this one, why now.”

Ernest Woo.

The goal, he said, is to reduce unnecessary friction for readers.

“These will only feel effortless when some other part of it has been simplified away for the reader,” Woo noted, “so they can focus on the remaining part that they’re drawn to, without overloading them.”

At the same time, Woo stressed that readers still maintain the freedom to explore deeper details on their own.

“The reader’s freedom to explore is just as important as any recommendation we make.”

As webtoon platforms continue evolving alongside new technologies, Woo offered a perspective that differs from the industry’s frequent focus on spectacle-driven innovation.

For him, the webtoon format itself was already born from technological adaptation.

“Vertical scroll was itself an emerging-tech moment a decade ago. It took the constraints of the network, the smartphone, and turned them into a native form.”

Ernest Woo.

Combined with serialized weekly storytelling, that mobile-first approach helped expand both Tappytoon’s international audience and the webtoon industry overall.

Still, Woo believes technology should primarily support creators and readers rather than distract from storytelling itself.

“Technology tends to end up being about spectacle. So I’m rather more interested in how it can help around stories and fans.”

Ernest Woo.

He specifically pointed to improving systems that better recognize creators’ work while also rewarding audience dedication.

“I look forward to developing more ways that help recognize and respect our artist and creator works, more solutions that respect and reward our reader’s time, dedication, enthusiasm.”

Ernest Woo.

Woo also highlighted practical improvements such as accessibility, convenience, speed, and platform stability as ongoing priorities for the industry.

At the same time, he challenged the growing assumption that immersion automatically requires increasingly complex technology.

“I also push back on the assumption that ‘immersion’ requires more sensory stimulation.”

Ernest Woo.

Instead, he believes audiences themselves already bring imagination and emotional investment into the reading experience.

“Our audiences are intelligent, focused, imaginative. Many read hundreds of chapters across multiple series without a sweat.”

Ernest Woo.

Tappytoon’s Next Chapter After the Webby Awards

As the company enters its second decade, Tappytoon’s Webby Awards recognition may represent more than a single achievement.

The platform’s continued growth reflects how Korean webtoons have evolved into global entertainment ecosystems that extend across publishing, streaming adaptations, merchandise, fandom events, and digital communities.

For Woo, however, the focus remains grounded in strengthening the relationship between stories and the people who love them.

“It’s a matter of finding the way that feels ‘just right’ to connect outward from the Tappytoon experience.”

Ernest Woo.

And after Tappytoon’s Webby Awards victory powered directly by fan votes, that community-first philosophy appears to be resonating worldwide.
